Cllr. Gareth Eales - For Northampton South

Gareth Eales said: "I was flattered to be asked to help the community and the public meeting was a huge success. I am absolutely putting party politics aside and will be happily working with councillor Andrew Kilbride (Con, Billing & Rectory Farm), who attended the meeting, to convey the high levels of anger local people feel on this issue to Stagecoach and ask that they reflect. Make no mistake, this isn’t a protest movement, this is a campaign for a solution. So should further dialogue with Stagecoach fall on deaf ears, there are other avenues we will go down. We’re just getting started."

PARLIAMENT SHUTDOWN – A NASTY PRECEDENT! Protests are underway across the country against the government’s decision to prorogue parliament and essentially close down scrutiny or further meaningful debate on Brexit, as we head towards the 31st October deadline. I fully support these peaceful prot.

Devastating developments around Dallington Nursery. I know how much hard work went into this project and how sad the committee feel. I don’t quite understand why the goal posts have been moved, but the net result is the nursery won’t be able to return. Sad times! 😔

A fantastic turnout tonight for the public meeting of residents in Billing and Bellinge, who are up in arms after bus operator Stagecoach made changes to its number 16 service, which came into effect on 28th July, meaning the streets that run off Fishponds Road now do not have easy access to a bus. I was flattered to be asked to help the community and the public meeting was a huge success. I am absolutely putting party politics aside and will be happily working with Cllr Andrew Kilbride (Con, Billing & Rectory Farm), who attended the meeting, to convey the high levels of anger local people feel on this issue to Stagecoach and ask that they reflect. Over the last week there has been fury over the government’s consideration to raise the pension age to 75 based on findings from the centre right think tank, The Centre for Social Justice, which is led by the former conservative party leader Iain Duncan Smith. The proposal is to raise the state pe.

This is a constitutional outrage. It’s of special concern that two of the county’s Tory MPs are senior ministers ‭–‬ one a law officer. They may have known of the Government plan and if they did and chose to keep it secret from the public who elected them‭, then it’s ‬appalling. Here in Northamptonshire we have had our local elections cancelled. Now we may have our Parliament shut down. This is conduct more befitting a medieval monarch than one of the world’s most advanced democracies.‭ ‬Whatever you’re views on Brexit, Parliament must have its say on Government proposals, as is its constitutional right. - General Election now!

My thoughts are with the fans of Bury FC, after their expulsion from the Football League and effective closure. We’ve had some tough times off the field at The Cobblers and every football fan will know what a club means to a community. I hope Bury FC can rise again and that Bolton Wanderers can still be saved. There is though something quite wrong here and the distribution of finances in football needs to be looked at. How can it be right where a club like Bury that’s existed for 125 years, won the FA Cup twice, can close over a £2.5m debt, yet neighbouring ‘bigger clubs’ pay out in player wages alone hundreds of millions of pounds a year and with the Premier League generating BILLIONS a year in revenue, with less than 1% of this fortune going to grassroots football. It’s obscene and the fabric of our national game is dying. Clearly every club needs to be ran astutely and ethically, but the football family should work more collaboratively to avoid the essential death of clubs like Bury, a town that will in itself be decimated by this event. Football fans should be given more say on how their clubs operate, as there have been many high profile cases of problematic owners, look down the road at Coventry FC as just one example. Football supporters' trusts should be offered the chance to purchase shares when clubs change hands. They should also be able to have a say on who makes up the club’s board of directors. This is a sad day for football, but I fear similar days will come soon. 😔⚽️⚰️ Story here 👉: https://www.skysports.com/share/11795575

In this video, Northamptonshire Police Chief Constable Nick Adderley explains why we will be the first police force in the country to arm all of our front-line officers with Tasers.

Cllr. Gareth Eales - For Northampton South

It shouldn’t be necessary, but I absolutely support the Northants Police Chief Constable on this, provided any use is a last resort. The loss of thousands of officers to cuts over the last ten years has seen crime and violence soar, tasers will help keep officers safe, but only a real terms investment in police officer and staff numbers will keep the public safe, which MUST be addressed.

From the creators of Universal Credit - this would be yet another horrible policy that discriminates against working class people who don't have the means to retire early, and don't live as long in retirement. The Tories want you to work till you drop! ⚰️ - here’s an idea 💡 let’s drop them! 🗳👋

The expected funding gap for Northamptonshire County Council in 2020/21 has increased by £23.7million in just six months. The significant funding gap now stands at a whopping £34.9million, but in February it had been £11.2million...even more savage cuts to follow, unless we get a new government and a new financial settlement for our local councils.

Between April and June 2019 town centre recorded footfall had fallen in Northampton by 729,449 in comparison with 2018 figures. Councillor Gareth Eales (Lab, Spencer) said: “The figures are a concern, but to some extent it’s not really surprising. "There are a multitude of factors that are aiding the decline of our town centre, the super-size retail experience of both Milton Keynes and Rushden Lakes, the loss of certain big retailers over the last twelve months, increases in parking charges and reduced bus services can only assist a reduction in foot-fall. "Imagine how much more of a reduction we would have seen without the new university campus? This only makes the need to get the so-called 'Town Centre Masterplan' 100 per cent right, with all political parties working together, whilst ensuring maximum citizen participation in a transparent democratic process.”

Cllr. Gareth Eales - For Northampton South

Gareth Eales said: "From speaking to people for only half an hour, there is huge anger and concern about this. So many people now feel cut off, as a bus service is some peoples only form of transport. I was flattered to be asked to help the community to campaign for a resolution. The public meeting is essential, as if there is to be any degree of success, we need people to work with us."
