We need a General Election now to bring the country together and build a fairer society for the many, not the few.
Calls to make Northampton carbon neutral and ban single-use plastics at schools will be debated by councillors as part of a discussion over a ‘green revolution’ in the town.
Cruel Tory benefit reforms are today compared to a Victorian workhouse by a United Nations Special Rapporteur.
Labour and myself welcome the formulation of a Town Centre Masterplan and that a bid for up to £25 million funding from the governments Future High Streets Fund could only be a positive thing for Northampton, especially if we are successful. However, Labour are deeply concerned about the process that is being adopted, which contravenes some fundamental protocols. Until it no longer exists or is replaced, Northampton Borough Council is the current authority with responsibility for the Town Centre and regeneration and yet this fundamental role is being circumvented during the Town Centre Masterplan process. The formation of 'Northampton Forward' has been undertaken without any mandate from Full Council or indeed the cabinet and this entity is answerable to no-one - as such there is a deficit of democracy and accountability, as the board of 'Northampton Forward' is scheduled to be the sole decision maker on any final bid that goes forward and the body that considers any public feedback. There is of course a role for stakeholders and partners, but it is imperative that Northampton Borough Council and elected members play a role in what should be a positive process, as is our elected responsibilities. The Town Centre Masterplan and the grouping that drives it should not be something that operates in a veil of secrecy with a huge whiff of cronyism, this town has suffered enough of that. To remedy this situation and to ensure the best outcomes, Labour are submitting to the 3rd June Full Council meeting a motion, seeking the following steps; 1) Full Council to nominate Councillors from each political grouping to sit on the Northampton Forward board. The numbers should be; Conservative 3, Labour 2 and Lib Dem 1. These Councillors should play active roles as board members in considering the feedback from the public and shaping any final plan that is submitted for consideration, working in parity with the rest of the board. 2) Full Council should formally vote on any final Town Centre plans that are to be part of any bid. This plan can be pre-agreed by the Northampton Forward board ‘in principle’ and then brought to Full Council for rubber-stamping. Labour had hoped such a motion wouldn't be necessary and common-sense would have prevailed already. I know a number of Conservative Councillors are unhappy about this issue too. With cross party involvement and Councillors on the Northampton Forward board, it will ensure ‘buy in’ from all political groups and everyone positively focused on the best outcome for the town, whilst still respecting the role and democracy of Northampton Borough Council. What we cannot have is an unelected and unaccountable quango to take control of our towns future or for this Conservative Council to outsource our democracy and accountability.
I was very proud to have Alfie Bear's Journey as my charity when I was the Mayor. Great cause and wonderful people, they deserve recognition. 🐻🎗👏

The evidence that the people of Northampton wants a West Northamptonshire Council needs to be revealed, the town's Labour group has said.
BREAKING: TORIES SCRAP NORTHAMPTON...the government has announced two new authorities for Northants are APPROVED. Will be fully operational from 1 April 2021, with elections taking place in May 2020 to shadow authorities. Full release here 👉: https://tinyurl.com/y5ouyj7j Labour response to follow.
Wow! It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since this. What an experience it was to be the 777th Mayor of Northampton...✌️❤️
A huge broken promise - local residents, especially the people of St James, will rightly feel very angry! 😡 Something doesn’t smell right on this - to discover contamination so late in the day, after the land was purchased is very odd. Further updates to follow.
Absolutely I have made many representations about the anti-social behaviour around this disused factory unit, but is the proposed development good enough? I will analyse the detail and post further updates soon.

The multi-million-pound cost of scrapping Northamptonshire’s eight councils and replacing them with two large unitaries will be put under the microscope. Costings from a leaked report into the price of the transition have suggested the amount could rise to £44m from the original anticipated cost of £30m.
Taxi for Theresa? 👵🏻🚕🤔
Ward councillor Gareth Eales wrote in his representation: “Residents are happy that a longstanding eyesore is to be developed, so long as highways give due consideration to any preventative measures that can be implemented to prevent dangerous parking.”

I feel very privileged to have attended the Eco March Northampton event today and stand with so many young people (and some not so 😉) who are rightly passionate & concerned about the climate change crisis. Well done to the organisers, they should feel very proud 🌍👏
HAVE YOUR SAY...before it’s too late!
Councillor Gareth Eales said: “This is a private company, even if they are acting on behalf of a charity. It wants to potentially take donations from Northampton residents, so I don’t see it as unreasonable not to know a bit more about how this company operates. It’s not just about their accounts, it’s about what confidence we can have in them.”
Happy St George’s Day folks...I hope everyone has a good day...if you’re out having a few beers, let’s be careful & kind out there! 🌹✌️
This is extremely worrying!
Councillor Gareth Eales (Lab, Spencer) was among the first to call for a fresh consultation over the tariffs. “This feels like a small victory and I’m pleased to have played my part in exposing what was an undemocratic approach," he said. "I still feel any increases in parking charges would be immensely damaging to the town centre and our small businesses. The truth is the funding gap the Conservative council is trying to plug is to pay for the local government restructure, which nobody supports or wants."
This is desperately sad news...a fantastic town centre independent retailer forced to close their doors. 😔
We had a fantastic time talking to the electorate in Castle. As a town, we need to come together to find solutions to the many problems we are facing. It would fantastic to have the opportunity to put our ideas forward in local elections, but your Tory Council and your Tory Government have robbed us of that opportunity, and robbed you of the chance to have your say at the ballot box 🗳❌ We will keep working hard with our fantastic Labour Councillors and our brilliant Parliamentary candidate Cllr. Gareth Eales - For Northampton South to make the change the people of Northampton South want and need. We are #FromNorthamptonSouthForNorthamptonSouth ✊🌹
Opposition councillors are exploring ways of bringing a council-owned football pitch back into use.
Oh dear! We point out two pretty obvious facts and Andrew Lewer blocks us on Twitter. It’s almost like he doesn’t want people to know he lives in Ashbourne, DERBYSHIRE...which by the way is over 80 miles away from Northampton South, where he is the MP.
An awful lot of money is going into this - yet not one single local resident has ever voted for it! A local government reorganisation that no-one supports and only Tories want! Oh and your local council elections have been cancelled this year...angry yet?! 🤔😡❓
Continued great work by Duston Labour on the ‘Timken Tax’ 👏👏
Theresa May just said this at Prime Ministers Questions...I think someone needs to tell her that Northamptonshire County Council is Conservative run! 🤦🏻♂️
A potential further hammer blow for our Town Centre! 😭 - I hope the chain can be saved and our store saved.
Bit of news on the Northampton Missing Millions saga. We found out the Cardozas had their attempt to appeal January’s High Court judgement against them thrown out. Lord Justice Davis said action to recover the money will likely bankrupt them! Fingers crossed now for the criminal prosecutions!

I’m sure this lady is very capable, but an annual salary of £258,000 at a bankrupt council is taking the p*ss, especially when children’s services are about to be hit with such severe budgets cuts - including my local Camrose Early Years Centre for Children & Families 🤬🤯

Northamptonshire County Council Council leader Matt Golby has sacked the long standing chair of the authority’s pension committee after he voted against a plan for the council raid £2 MILLION out of the pension fund. FFS - it gets worse!
Anyone worried about litter around the new Kings Heath Skate Park, please be assured some litter bins are due to be fitted shortly, along with benches to sit on! 🗑👍
This pay rise came into effect yesterday (April Fools Day) - but felt this was worth sharing again...👀📺
This is not an April Fools, but it’s nothing to celebrate either. The attacks on staff and services have been brutal, just look at what’s about to happen to our early years nurseries. Not to mention the 5% Council Tax rise! Yet the Council Leadership have the nerve to pat themselves on the back. Imagine being that shallow that the bottom line of a financial spreadsheet means more to you that people’s lives?! Pitiful state of affairs!
Here's Theresa May saying that cutting police budgets "won't affect their ability to do the job". The police force was cut by 21,000 and today she is trying to dump responsibility for the spike in #KnifeCrime onto the NHS and teachers. Incredible! http://news.sky.com/story/teachers-could-soon-have-legal-duty-to-act-against-knife-crime-11680761
