Friends, we are saddened to inform you Betty Higgins, former Leader of Nottingham Council, has passed away aged 92. Betty was the first female Council leader in Nottingham, starting her career as a teacher in the city, before leading the Council for 10 years. Nottingham City Council Leader Jon Collins has paid tribute to Betty, saying “Betty was an incredibly astute and capable Leader, working in difficult times. She was able to balance and support the different views within the Party and was universally respected. “She was pivotal in retaining and improving the many services we still control today as a Council, in a time of sweeping privatisation and Government sell offs. She held onto our Bus company, improved Council Housing stock and secured Nottingham as a Unitary Authority. “She was without doubt, the best leader in my lifetime and will be greatly missed.”
